Pursuing B.S. in Computational Media
@ Georgia Tech
Hey! I’m Ryan, welcome to my page! I am a Chinese-American filmmaker and developer pursuing a degree in Computational Media at Georgia Tech. I combine my education in both the technology and arts to bring the stories of myself, my family, and my community to life. Whether it be through visual effects, video games, development projects, or even this portfolio website, the one thing I prioritize in all my work is the feeling of comfort. Growing up, seeing my stories and my culture represented in some of my all-time favorite shows like Fresh Off The Boat let me know that I wasn’t alone in my struggles, which was especially reassuring when I lived in areas where I felt distant from my roots. When I discovered my talent for telling stories for the screen in middle school, I knew that I wanted my art to have the same resounding message as the pieces I hold dear: “You are not alone in this.” This is a principle I have carried over to development and Software Engineering since enrolling at Georgia Tech and delving deep into the field of computer science. Modular, reusable tools and software designed to improve lives encapsulate that principle perfectly. Whether it be as an artist, a computer scientist, or both, my mission as a person is to make a positive and lasting impact in people’s lives.

Rock Climbing
Aquarium-Keeping
When I’m not at my computer writing, editing, or coding, you can probably find me somewhere above sea level rock climbing! Indoor, outdoor, doesn’t matter. Climbing exercises both my mind and body as I try different technical and physical approaches to send routes and boulder problems. On other days, you can probably find me tending to my multiple aquariums that I’ve set up to replicate certain ecosystems and biomes. The organisms serve not only as entertaining pets, but a part of a living piece of art I carefully raise and cultivate. I’m very passionate about my hobbies and love getting more people involved in what I love to do, so I always take it upon myself to get involved in leadership in organizations on campus. I am currently serving as the Co-President of the Georgia Tech Climbing Club, as well as the Historian for the filmmaking club on campus, Buzz Studios.

This is my Editing and VFX reel! This reel highlights some of my favorite works from the past couple of years. I really wanted to highlight my editing style and rhythm with this reel. Some of my favorite techniques are to use digital editing and visual effects techniques to recreate the look of analog or other mediums. As you can see from the beginning of the reel, I created a 50’s film look, as well as a VHS found-footage look for two of my short films that called for a different look than the traditional crisp and sharp digital footage of the cameras I shoot with. These were some of my favorite edits, as it required some thinking outside the box on-set as well as in post on how exactly I could achieve the look I was going for.
